"If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary." "In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself."
-James Madison (Federalist No. 51)
I often reflect on the tension between maintaining identity and living authentically. The roles and labels we carry can help us navigate society, but they can also confine us. When identity becomes something we must constantly defend, it can distance us from others. There is a quiet freedom in simply being human, in allowing character, empathy, and self-awareness to guide us more than the expectations attached to labels.
1. Separate Your Identity from America (Or Your Country)
- America is an idea, arguably a government of the people, by the people, for the people.
- If America (or your country) ceases, you do not.
- If America (or your country) is insulted, it is not an insult against you.
- When people insult America (or your country), they are often criticizing its present trajectory, not the idea in its authentic form.
2. Do Not Assume America (Or Your Country) Cannot Be Corrupt
- Do not believe America (or your country) cannot be corrupt simply because of "American values" (Or Your Countries values) or policies.
- If you hold this belief, you will become blind to corruption.
- If you are blind to corruption, you will enable and empower it.
- Vigilance is required to prevent corruption, not blind faith.
- Empowering a corrupted America (or country) is akin to feeding the Empire in Star Wars. The road to hell is often paved with good intentions.
Understanding the Path to Corruption
- When you see yourself in a position above others and believe that authorizes you to decide what is best for them, you enter a position of corruptibility.
- This danger grows when exceptions begin to justify harmful actions "for the greater good."
- At that point, the logic resembles the mindset of Thanos in the MCU,believing extreme harm is justified in pursuit of a perceived greater balance.
- Corruption often begins when an individual or institution believes it possesses the truth more than others, and that this belief entitles it to make decisions on behalf of everyone else.
- When you begin to believe darkness is necessary for light to persist, you are walking along the edges of corruption.
